Invisalign Clear Aligners in Redwood City
Invisalign is a teeth-straightening system that uses a series of custom-made, virtually invisible plastic trays to gradually move your teeth into better alignment. Unlike traditional metal braces, the aligners are removable, smooth against the soft tissues of your mouth, and nearly undetectable when worn. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, one in four orthodontic patients today is an adult, and clear aligners like Invisalign are a primary reason more adults are seeking orthodontic treatment than ever before.
At Smile Craft Dental, we offer Invisalign treatment for adults and teens through our comprehensive orthodontics program. We begin every case with a full evaluation and digital 3D scanning to map your treatment from start to finish before a single tray is made.

What Invisalign Can Correct
Invisalign works well for a wide range of alignment issues, including:
- Crowded teeth, where teeth overlap and are difficult to clean effectively
- Gaps between teeth that affect appearance and bite function
- Overbite, where the upper front teeth close too far over the lower teeth
- Underbite, where the lower teeth protrude past the upper teeth
- Crossbite, where some upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth when biting
- An open bite, where the upper and lower teeth do not make contact in the front
- Mild to moderate general misalignment
Severe bite issues or significant skeletal discrepancies may require traditional braces or a combined orthodontic and oral surgery approach. Your consultation will determine which treatment is right for your case.

Am I a Good Candidate for Invisalign?
Invisalign works best for patients with mild to moderate orthodontic concerns. You are likely a strong candidate if:
- Your teeth are fully erupted (typically age 12 or older for teens, any adult age)
- You have mild to moderate crowding, spacing, or bite issues
- You are disciplined about wearing aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day
- You are looking for a discreet treatment option because of work, social, or personal preferences
Patients with severe misalignment, significant rotations, or bite problems involving the jaw may need a referral to an orthodontist for traditional braces or a combination approach. We will be honest with you at your consultation if Invisalign is not the best fit for your case.

The Invisalign Treatment Process
Here is what to expect from your first consultation through the end of treatment:
- Step 1: Consultation. We examine your teeth, take X-rays, and discuss your smile goals. We will confirm whether Invisalign is appropriate and give you a general sense of treatment duration.
- Step 2: 3D Digital Scanning. We use our in-office digital scanner to capture a precise 3D map of your teeth. This is sent to the Invisalign lab along with your treatment plan to fabricate your custom aligner series.
- Step 3: Review Your Treatment Plan. Before your aligners arrive, you can see a digital simulation showing the projected movement of your teeth from your current position to the intended final result.
- Step 4: Wear Your Aligners. You receive your full set of trays and begin wearing them in sequence. Each tray is worn for about one to two weeks before you switch to the next. Aligners should be worn 20 to 22 hours a day, removed only for eating, drinking (anything other than water), and brushing.
- Step 5: Progress Checkups. We see you every 6 to 8 weeks to monitor progress and ensure the teeth are moving as planned.
- Step 6: Refinements (if needed). Some patients require a round of refinement trays to fine-tune the final result. This is built into the Invisalign process and is common.
- Step 7: Retainers. Once treatment is complete, you will wear a retainer to hold your teeth in their new positions. Most patients wear retainers nightly long-term.
The American Association of Orthodontists notes that clear aligners have become one of the most widely used orthodontic treatment modalities, valued for their combination of discretion, removability, and effectiveness for appropriate cases.

Invisalign Teen in Redwood City
We also offer Invisalign Teen, a version of the system designed specifically for teenagers. Invisalign Teen includes compliance indicators that fade from blue to clear, so parents can monitor whether aligners are being worn consistently. It also includes replacement aligners for the trays that are most likely to be lost or damaged. Teens who play contact sports or instruments particularly benefit from the removable design.
Benefits of Choosing Invisalign Over Traditional Braces
Clear aligners offer several advantages that make them the preferred choice for many of our Redwood City patients:
- Nearly invisible, so most people will not notice you are in treatment
- Removable for meals, so no food restrictions during treatment
- Easier to maintain good oral hygiene compared to brushing around brackets and wires
- No emergency visits for broken brackets or poking wires
- Fewer in-office visits than traditional braces in most cases
- Smooth trays that do not irritate cheeks and gums

Frequently Asked Questions About Invisalign
Our orthodontic patients typically ask us the following questions about Invisalign:
How Long Does Invisalign Treatment Take?
Average treatment time is 12 to 18 months for most adults, though mild cases can be completed in as little as 6 months. More complex cases may take closer to 24 months. Your personalized timeline will be discussed at your consultation once we have reviewed your 3D scan.
Does Invisalign Hurt?
Invisalign does not cause the cheek and gum irritation common with traditional braces. When you switch to a new set of trays, you may feel mild pressure or tenderness for one to two days as your teeth begin to shift. This is normal and a sign the aligners are working. Over-the-counter pain relievers help if needed.
How Do I Keep My Aligners Clean?
Rinse aligners with lukewarm water whenever you remove them. Clean them gently with a soft toothbrush and clear, unscented soap or an Invisalign-approved cleaning solution. Avoid hot water, which can warp the plastic. Always brush and floss before reinserting aligners to prevent trapping food and bacteria against your teeth.
What Happens After Invisalign? Do I Need a Retainer?
Yes. Retainers are a permanent part of orthodontic treatment regardless of what system you use. After completing Invisalign, you will receive a set of clear retainers to wear nightly. Skipping retainer wear causes teeth to shift back toward their original positions over time.
Does Dental Insurance Cover Invisalign?
Many PPO plans that include orthodontic benefits will apply that coverage to Invisalign, the same as they would to traditional braces. Typical coverage ranges from $1,000 to $2,500, depending on your plan. Our team will verify your orthodontic benefits before you begin treatment.
How Does 3D Scanning Work for Invisalign?
We use 3D dental scanning technology to create a precise digital model of your teeth without physical impressions. The scanner captures thousands of data points in minutes and sends them directly to the Invisalign lab for tray fabrication. The result is a highly accurate fit from your very first aligner.
